Energy In a Climate of Rapid Change
THE RESILIENCE WORKSHOP
Local Solutions for Global Challenges
Donald K. Johnson Centre, 130 King W. Downtown Toronto
Assessing Change Vulnerability, Pricing Rates for Resilience, Next-Gen Markets
Change is Happening Faster Than We Know.
Climate Change embodies more than our weather. Sure, an increase in storms, droughts, and rising sea levels are massive threats to our energy infrastructure. Utilities are at the front line of this battle to maintain their high levels of customer service as surges in dangerous winds and flash floods challenge grid reliability. But the management of our longer term climate change mitigation responses also put strains on our Energy Operators as new and large loads are added through sweeping electrification of transportation, and major commercial, industrial, and residential segments. We can add to this, a growing decentralization movement that is aimed at local decarbonization goals and/or rapid enabling of economic expansion - the interoperability of these microgrids can influence central grid optimization.

It's not IF but WHEN: So what are the rapid changes I can expect?
-
What are my greatest system vulnerabilities?
-
What answers are available off-the-shelf to manage risk?
-
What technologies are emerging to advantage Energy Operators moving forward?
-
How are the costs of resilience priced and factored into rates?
Who Should Attend?
UTILITIES
Utilities have plenty in common, but your Utility is distinct. You have local demands and local effects that require custom solutions. There are no "One Size Fits All" panaceas in power provision. Learn how to leverage your uniqueness to develop new rate structures.
SYSTEM OPERATORS
How does local resilience up-cascde into a central grid reliability? Are their multiple solutions to new large customer connection challenges?
REGULATORS
What are autonomous agent driven market structures? Will emerging micro-grid market architectures have central grid applications?
SERVICE PROVIDERS
Learn what gaps need your support. Leverage your experience to help articulate the key actions for profitable energy system transitions.
LARGE CUSTOMERS
As a large customer your resilience and that of the grid are inter-related. Learn more about opportunities to work with service providers and grid management stakeholders to create win-win outcomes.
Event Agenda
0900 - 1030 A CLIMATE OF RAPID CHANGE.
Weather, New Mobility and Thermal Electrification Loads, Grid Decentralizations, Large Customer Connections, Emerging Market Structures, Plain Ole Load Growth. Let's dive in.
1030 - 1045 CARS AND COFFEE.
Caffeinate and connect with new friends while racing EVs (RC Cars;) through our Track of Energy Transition. Top finishers take home Winners Circle Prizes.
1045 - 1145 YOUR CHALLENGES.
Participants interact through rapid Mentimetering real-time surveys of today's pressing challenges. Results are reviewed and discussed in open floor format with participants illustrating how their own stories compare to the room.
1145 - 1230 LEMANS LUNCH.
Enjoy lunch with an opportunity to help your race team climb in the standings before Winners Circle decisions.
1230 - 1330 ANSWERS TODAY.
What is commercially available today to help manage the Climate of Rapid Change and Challenges revealed in the morning?
1330 - 1430 EMERGING TOOLS FOR TOMORROW.
Emerging tools to investigate energy system vulnerability, plan for disruptive upstream loads, and tools to develop new DER market architectures are previewed.
1430 - 1530 MACRO PLANS FOR CHANGE.
With emerging knowledge and toolsets that can help assess vulnerability, and highlight actions for change, what near, midterm, and longer range plans can be made?
1530 - 1630 PRICING THE COST OF RESILIENCE.
Hardening infrastructure and transition technology to manage change costs money. We examine how these costs can be calculated and investigate their connection to rate structures.
1630 - 1830 NETWORKING COCKTAILS.
Winners Circle prizes are awarded. Drinks power next step discussions and relationship building.
